Each year, the Swedish Transport Administration reports approximately 5,000 wildlife collisions on railways, leading to significant material damage, operational delays, and harm to animals. Traditional mitigation methods have proven insufficient, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to enhance railway safety and protect wildlife.
In collaboration with Alstom, we secured SEK 3.3 million in funding from Vinnova to conduct field tests of an AI-based system designed to prevent wildlife collisions. The system utilizes advanced image analytics and AI algorithms to detect animals near railway tracks and emits tailored deterrent audio signals to prevent them from entering the tracks. Field tests are scheduled on selected Swedish railway lines during autumn 2024 and winter 2025.
